Some words seem to bring up
a negative
connotation to
just about
anyone that
hears them:
murder,
amputation,
massacre, brussel sprouts
and yes,
torture. Hard to
put a positive
spin on the
afore mentioned
as the stories
that usually
feature them do
not have happy
endings. Or do
they? In the
right hands
anything can be
funny. I didn't
say it wouldn't
be a bit twisted
as well, but
humor can be
found sometimes
in the strangest
places. Such is
the case with
Christopher
Durang's
Why Torture is
Wrong, and the
People Who Love
Them
now playing at
the Stella Adler
Theatre.
Has this ever
happened to you?
Wake up from a
night of heavy
drinking and
find yourself
married to a
total stranger?
No? Funny, it
seems to happen
in movies and
plays all the
time. Well if
you had you
might feel a bit
like Felicity
who faces a new
day with a new
husband named Zamir who she
apparently met
and married in a
Hooters the
night before.
Those kinds of
nights do lead
to some very bad
hangovers but
things go from
bad to worse as
she learns more
about her new
spouse, and then
she has to tell
her parents. Dad
immediately
thinks it is all
a scheme of Zamir's to get
into the country
and plot
something
diabolical. And
he plans on
finding out
exactly what
that may be by
whatever means
necessary. Now
Felicity has an
even bigger
problem. She
loves her father
but how can she
just stand by
while he
"questions" her
new husband just
short of organ
failure.
Whether your
wings are on the
left or the
right, no one is
spared the razor
sharp wit of a
Christopher
Durang script
with characters
that seem to
represent all
sides of the
political
landscape. For
no one can take
a subject that
can seem bereft
of humor and
have audiences
laughing out
loud like this
man can. Come
find out how
something so
wrong can be so
very very funny.
