They call them
"Star Vehicles,"
movies or plays
that revolve
around a strong
main character
which can be a
way for certain
celebrities to
really showcase
their talents.
Of course, these
are not offered
to just any
performer and
the ability to
carry a show on
their own is a
responsibility
they take great
pride in. And to
which star and
which vehicle do
I refer to in
this particular
instance? Why
the always
wonderful
Annette Bening
who is currently
staring in the
The
Female of the
Species
currently in
production at
the Geffen
Playhouse.
Bening plays
Margo Mason, a
feminist writer
hell-bent on
getting her next
novel completed.
As they say you
are only as good
as your last
best seller and
her last one was
quite some time
ago plus the
mortgage is due.
Unfortunately
she might just
miss her
deadline when
Molly, a
disgruntled
ex-student of
hers arrives
with a grudge
and gun. However
no sooner does
Molly have the
famous author
tied up then
Margo's daughter
Tess arrives to
tell her mother
what she really
thinks of her.
But after
walking into the
middle of this
unsettling
situation Tess
still has to ask
herself whose
side she is on,
Molly's or her
mother's.
With Annette
Bening leading
the way as the
larger then life
monster that is
Margo and a
superb
supporting cast
that holds their
own in every
scene it truly
is a vehicle fit
for a star.
Author Joanna Mauray-Smith
based the play
around actual
events which
happened to a
fellow author in
the feminist
genre. From that
event a basis
for a play was
formed and with
a little
creative license
she had a hit on
her hands. It is
an interesting
dynamic to
decide who
really has the
power. One may
have a gun, but
are they really
the one in
charge? So come
find out who
will be left
standing in this
wickedly wild
farce and decide
for yourself who
is the more
deadly.
